Throughout the semester, we’ve done a lot of projects, I’ve learned a lot, and naturally, I have a lot of opinions.
I loved the opportunity to revisit my website. I’ve redesigned the layout in which I showcase my work, and I believe that i’ve found a great new way to showcase my production work as it expands. I also am happy with the way i’ve opted to showcase my photography. It’s still prominent on my website, even though it’s not something I’m looking to pursue commercially. I think that the website should be due before the personal brand presentations. I love seeing the websites (and comparing mine, and stealing ideas I like), but since those presentations doubled as networking opportunities, it would be a great way to guarantee students have a version of their assembled portfolios ready for their presentations.
I loved hating the elevator pitch. Like most of the students in the class, I think I hated doing the project, but i’m happy with the pitch I ultimately came up with, and I’m glad it forced me to reflect on myself and find a great way to properly pitch myself. I found the entrepreneur stuff interesting, but I think that some more technical (boring) stuff would be really helpful. Talking through how to make and store invoices, possibly pretend to register an LLC, and maybe even some basic accounting, just so that we have that knowledge when starting to freelance.
As for the mentor, I actually never reached out to my assigned mentor (oops). However, right around the same time we were assigned mentors, I began connecting with a colorist here in Omaha, and I’ve had the opportunity to meet with him a number of times, and I’ve learned a ton from that relationship. He’s critiqued some of my work, he’s shared workflow tips to ease the strain on my computer, and the last time we met, we talked through a number of the technicalities that are specific to the world of color correction…. monitor calibration, bit depth, HDR workflow, gamut, and a bunch of other technical stuff that i’m only just beginning to understand.
My biggest takeaway is to enjoy the time while you have it, and to constantly advocate for yourself. We’ve got fantastic teachers in this department, and they want to help you. If you’re struggling, they’ll do whatever they can to help you out. You just need to ask.
Ultimately I want to thank you for this semester. I’ve had an amazing time, and this class has definitely been a highlight of my time here at Creighton.
